Have You Found Your Jam?

14 May

It’s time to add a new definition to the dictionary. “Jam” isn’t mere fruit-jelly because my “jam” is the absolute spice of life. What has you going back for more forever and without hesitation? It’s something you can always find energy for, even when you were previously completely out of gas. My jam is God-given opportunities to minister. That sense of knowing that I’ve been called, I’ve been sent seems to bring every cell in my body and brain to life.

God recently surprised me by giving me a new jam. It’s an unexpected jam, but it makes perfect sense, based on all that God has done in and through me. And my jam is…drumroll, please…praying for people in person and interceding as a lifestyle throughout every day. The topic of prayer, such as reading the works of famed prayer master E. M. Bounds, gives me jittery butterflies of anticipation. I want to absorb all that I can about prayer so that I can give my very best to my jam.

It’s not just me and a chosen few who have God-given callings. When we follow Jesus and choose to live as Christians, we all have a calling that gives us the fullness of joy. There are phases of life when we are being prepared to walk in that calling. In my 40 years as a born-again Christian, I first waited a God-led 12 years and then had 6 power-packed years of being out there in the world, walking in my calling, sharing the Good News of salvation through Jesus. It involved singing in prisons; writing, hosting, and editing a television show for kids; rapping in prisons; and producing an “album” of original music.

Then my calling changed. Helping to raise up godly grandchildren has been my behind-the-scenes jam for 10 years–and prep for that gig lasted 12 years! (Till just now, I didn’t realize there was a pattern of a dozen years of waiting!) The waiting part is exciting when every day is spent seeking God’s face. But I’d be lying if I didn’t say being in my jam is the best part of life.

Do you know what your jam is? Are you jamming?

The Phenomenal Love of God

16 Jul

Have you experienced the overwhelming love of God before? It’s not something that necessarily happens automatically, even for Christians. The love of God is there sort of like electricity is inside outlets. Until you plug something in, the flow of electricity doesn’t make an impact. There is nothing more powerful than love, and God is pure love.

Remaining distant from God makes it less likely that you will know just how amazing love can be. Millions of women dream of real love and read romance novels, even Christian romances. The dream of finding love resides in all of our hearts. God loves us more than anyone, and He can cause is to feel that love in the way we crave to be loved. But how do we experience that?

The fact of God’s love is clear throughout the Bible. Getting it from the words on a page to being like a raging waterfall of manifested love requires belief, getting to know God through His Word and through prayer, and obeying God. I can’t imagine a blessing in the Christian life greater than heartfelt knowledge of being completely and perfectly loved.

With a grasp of God’s love, it becomes impossible to be lukewarm about Him. Christianity would be making a far greater impact on the world if more Christians held tightly to God and never let go, because of bonds of love.

You know how love has a reputation for making people do crazy things? Well, the off-the-charts thing we are actually instructed to do is to make disciples. People need to hear about God and salvation and living with empowerment of the Holy Spirit. When we love God and others enough, we can share the Good News, even though it can be unpopular and result in persecution.

Ephesians 3:17-19 English Standard Version (ESV)
“17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth,19 and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.”

What to Do When the Devil Dogs are Nipping at You

Anybody besides me feeling increased daily pressure?  For me, it feels like being haunted by regrets, mistakes, missed relationships, and discouraging revelations of my general lifetime cluelessness as a person.  But after giving in to a consistent urging to spend more time praying every day, I realized that a spiritual battle is raging all around me as well as inside of me.

At this point, I can relate my struggle with being chased by pit bulls who are taking bites out of me as I rush on.  Then suddenly I have stopped and knelt to pray.  As I lift my eyes to the heavens, acknowledge the greatness of God, and begin praying for needs of my loved ones, my city, my country, and the world, the noisy barking stops and the dogs are gone.  Turns out they were just shadows.

I may have dropped the ball on writing Daily Pep Talk this year, but I have read the New Testament through, one day at a time.  I’m in Revelation and have been getting a sober reminder that there is an end to the world as we know it, and it is coming.   Rather than getting sucked in to worldly trends and trinkets, there has never been a better time to get hyper-focused on being a person who prays to God and obeys his every prompting.

The world needs Jesus.  I think the real pressure that’s going on is an escalation toward God’s secret timeline when the Truth will be revealed and eternity for heaven or hell begins for everyone.  Knowing Jesus as Lord and Savior is what makes the difference in what our eternal destination will be.

Have you felt increased pressure, too?  What do you think it is?
